Velscope uses the method of Fluorescence Visualization (FV) in which bright blue light is directed into the mouth to visualise changes and lesions that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
How is the screening for oral cancer done?
Our dentists will look inside your mouth for any kind of red or white lesions. In general, a cancerous lesion is either reddish or whitish. if any such lesion is found, the dentist then palpates it with his fingers to assess the consistency of the lesion. Cancerous lesions have a characteristic consistency and lumps.
After going through the clinical examination of the patient, our dentists then provide a preliminary idea regarding the malignant state of the lesion. For confirmation, at our clinic we use the Velscan , which is a non-invasive procedure, mostly. If required, a small sample of the lesion is taken and given for examination. That procedure is known as a biopsy.
